22 June 2018

Dear Parents

Common Entrance Results

Congratulations to all the Year 8 pupils who have worked so hard for their entrance exams to senior school.  They have all been successful in winning a place at their chosen school.  Excellent news for all!  As a result, from this cohort, we will have 35 pupils heading to 8 different schools, including 5 to Bryanston, 1 to BCS, 17 to Canford, 8 to Clayesmore, 1 to Hampshire Collegiate, 1 to Milton Abbey, 1 to Poole Grammar (Yr9) and 1 to Sherborne Girls.  Very well done.

Recitation Competition

We were very grateful to Gervase Phinn for visiting Dumpton once again to judge the Final of the Recitation Competition.  It was a delightful evening, with Esther P (Yr7), Bella H (Yr6), Joe S (Yr5), Xander J (Yr4) and Fraser B (Yr3) adjudged the winners.  Mr Phinn also found time to work with Year 3, Year 6 and Year 7 in class and impressed us all with his wry observations and enthusiastic support for the children.

Staff and Seniors Serenade

Thank you to all staff and pupils who contributed to such an enjoyable concert on Tuesday, including the staff and peripatetic music teachers.  Thank you also to Sue Watkiss who organised such an impressive programme.  It was an extremely pleasant evening with some outstanding and very memorable virtuoso performances. Thank you also to the parents and pupils for their generous applause on the night.

Sports Days

I would like to thank all the staff, pupils and parents involved in the annual Prep School Sports Day on Wednesday. Mr Randle et al produced an outstanding afternoon, with 220+ competitors all taking part in at least three events and everything running perfectly to time.  Similarly, I was really impressed by the spirit of the children in the Nursery and Reception Sports Day today - there were smiles in every race! We now look forward to the Year 1 and 2 Sports Day next Friday.

Swimming and Skiing

Well done to the Year 5 and 6 pupils who did us proud at the Canford Gala on Tuesday.  Similarly well done to the Ski Team who represented the school at Southampton last Sunday with Niamh T coming an impressive 2nd place overall.  If there are any more pupils in Year 3 or above that are interested in the next schools ski race on Sunday 16 September please contact n.williams@dumpton.com asap as we need to enter before the end of term.

The Young Enterprise ‘Fiver Challenge’

I have been walking round school with a handful of fivers this term!  Several groups of pupils in the Prep School have accepted the challenge to think of an idea, invest £5 into it, work hard, and see if they can turn a profit.  They have had four weeks before they must return the money (plus 10% interest payable to charity) to me.  The young entrepreneurs then divide up any profits, or donate them to charity, as they choose.

Several groups have already had great success with their pop-up shops around school – including sales of cakes, homemade snacks, elderflower cordial and lip balm – all showing very positive balance sheets.  Please now look out for other stalls at the gate next Thursday evening at pick-up, and perhaps again at the FoDS picnic. Some pupils have been conscientiously growing plants for some weeks and are hopeful that you will find some space on your window sills at home….

Looking ahead

Below are a few details of events to come in the last week of term to allow you to plan well ahead.

Dance Extravaganza – Thursday 5 July

This will take place outside by the marquee from 4.00 pm and will involve most of the pupils in the Pre-Prep and Prep School.  All parents welcome of course.  (A separate letter for arrangements for the Pre-Prep and older Nursery children will be sent shortly by e-mail) This will run into the ….

… End of Year Picnic – Thursday 5 July

All are welcome at this event.  Start time is 5.00 pm.  Please bring your own picnic to enjoy a lovely family occasion.  FoDS will circulate a flyer to all parents next week with further details.  This year the Dorset Larder, who provided catering at the Christmas Fayre, are going to be selling food.   As this is a family occasion it is requested that all children be accompanied by parents if they are attending.  Finish time 7.30 pm.  All pupils can wear home clothes during the day to save them changing out of school uniform later.  Pupils not attending will be supervised until 5.45 pm and school buses will then run as normal. If your child will not be on the bus please let Matron know –   matron@dumpton.com

Reports

Lessons for the Prep School will end on Thursday 5 July.  Reports will be distributed by email at the end of term.  The Nursery and Pre-Prep classes will finish for the term at 3.30 pm on Thursday 5 July but After School Club will run as usual.  There will be no lessons on Friday 6 July.

Speech Day – Friday 6 July

There are no school buses.  Prize Giving starts at 10.00 am for all children from Reception through to Year 8 and their families. Car parking will be signposted.  Children should come to school with their parents in time for Prize Giving and should sit with them. Dress code for Prep School: long-trousers, ties and blazers for boys; Pre-Prep: Normal school uniform.  Leavers and their parents are invited to drinks on the Headmaster’s Lawn from 12 noon.

Yours sincerely

Andrew Browning

PS There will be a brief road closure on Smugglers Lane from Monday 25 to Wednesday 27 June between 9.00 am and 4.00 pm – hopefully not too disruptive to our day.
