Dear Parents

It has been a wonderful first full week back at Dumpton. I have been fortunate enough to spend plenty of time observing lessons around the school, seeing pupils and teachers settle in to the new academic year. There is no better insight into a school for a new Head, and I have been most impressed by what I have seen. As I emphasised in my address to pupils at the beginning of the year, a new year is a chance for a new beginning, and I encouraged every child to make a positive first impression on their teachers in the first few lessons of the year. I am delighted to see so many pupils have done just that.

Parents might be interested to know that assemblies this week have been linked by the theme of kindness and the school rule: 'treat others as you would like to be treated'. Our aim as a staff is not just to pay lip service to this, but to see it enacted around the school by all the community. To borrow from Mr Nye's superb assembly, we want pupils and staff to "make kindness a normal part of life at Dumpton". Positive relationships and empathy for others are at the heart of any successful school: I could not think of a more valuable theme to begin the year.

But perhaps the greatest pleasure of this week was joining Year 1 on their trip to Wimborne Model Town. They were a delight to spend time with: smiling, energetic, and full of awe and wonder. I look forward to having similar opportunities to get to know other groups in the school as the year progresses.

Autumn Stroll
We hope that the Friends of Dumpton Stroll this Sunday (15 September) will be blessed by fine weather.  The FoDs Committee are expecting a healthy group of walkers! Thank you in advance for all of the preparations that have gone into this.  We look forward to seeing many of you in the Parents’ Car Park at 2.30 pm on Sunday.  The more the merrier….

Future Schools
My ‘Future Schools Presentation’ takes place at 7.30 pm next Thursday 19 September in the Recital Room.  Everyone is welcome, but we would be grateful if you would let Lerryn know if you are likely to attend.  I have written to all Prep School parents separately providing further details of this.

News from the Pre-Prep – from Miss Monaghan and Miss Goodhew
We have had a busy start to the term and the children seem to be settling well into their new classes.  The teachers have commented on how engaged and excited to learn the children are.  Year 1 have enjoyed their first outing of this academic year to Wimborne Model Village and were accompanied by Mr Saenger.  All classes have had the opportunity of both PE and dance in the new Sports Hall, taking full advantage of this wonderful new learning space.

From the Director of Sport – Mr Randle
What a wonderful start to the sporting term!  There were some terrific performances from boys and girls throughout the week and a special mention to the girls U11 hockey team who were runners up at the King’s Bruton tournament.

A reminder that for all regular match details please refer to the sports website.  Information for events such as a tournament, festival, athletics meet or swimming gala will be provided in good time if appropriate.  It is likely that we will require a response with important information; we are grateful to you for doing this as quickly as possible.

Following the conclusion of a match whether home or away, children should stay for match tea, which we see as an important aspect of the match day experience.  If another parent is collecting your child on your behalf on a match day, as usual please do email the school or your child’s coach in advance.

If our return time is later than published, the staff will phone Matron and let her know our anticipated arrival time and the pupils we have on the bus.  If necessary Matron will communicate this to parents by telephone.

Jeans for Genes
There will be a voluntary Jeans for Genes Mufti Day next Friday (20 September) with a £1 donation, as usual.  This will extend to children throughout the Prep School, Pre-Prep and Nursery. Thank you, in advance, for your support.

Individual and Sibling Photographs
Fraser Portraits will be in school to take photographs of each child next Thursday (19 September).  They will also take sibling photographs. If you would prefer not to have a sibling photograph taken, please just let us know j.jeremiah@dumpton.com.

Second Hand Uniform Shop
The Second Hand shop is currently bulging at the seams!  Therefore, for the time being we cannot take any more bags of clothes.  Just a reminder that the shop is open on a Monday afternoon from 3.00pm-5.30pm.

With best wishes

Christian Saenger
