Dear Parents

Our theme of the week was celebrating other cultures, and this fits into the wider theme of diversity and inclusion. We had a wonderful assembly from 7T on Monday celebrating varying languages and cultures. At Dumpton we work really hard to emphasise the importance of cherishing our differences - be those cultural differences, or those of race, gender, belief, or appearance. It was a pleasure to touch on this in my Pre-Prep assembly today, and it does fill me with hope when I see our children that the next generation might be the ones who finally conquer prejudice in all its grisly forms. Our work here never stops. Young children will not always get this right - we will tackle it robustly when they don't, but I hope our ethos at Dumpton and our focus on empathy and education will prevail.

Sport, Performing Arts, Outdoor Learning
There was brilliance everywhere I looked this week. From a sporting perspective, Y1 and Y2 were full of energy and enthusiasm for Mini-Kickers on Monday, Nursery had their first swimming session, and the girls hockey and boys football against Port Regis was so impressive. In the performing arts, the Y8 band wowed us in assembly with their rendition of 'Wild Thing', and the school orchestra had their first rehearsal at lunch today, with pupils from Y3 to Y8 involved. Outside the classroom, Y6 were making apple juice in the orchard during Outdoor Learning lessons, and both DECA and Hobbies saw a host of pupils getting their hands dirty (literally!) by weeding and clearing the beds for the new growing season. So many opportunities to enjoy, and so much character development in amongst it all. Thank you to all the staff involved in making this magic happen.

Communicating Better - Tapestry
Modern technology allows us to communicate with parents in entirely new ways. After using the online learning journal Tapestry with such success in the Nursery last year, we have rolled this out throughout the rest of the Pre-Prep, and also Y3. Tapestry allows class teachers to share special moments from the week with you through pictures and videos, and will hopefully give you a lovely insight into your child's learning experiences at Dumpton. Do contact your child's class teacher if you have any questions.

FoDS Events - the Quiz
Thank you to all those parents who came to the Dumpton Stroll last week - we had around 80 people and it was such a lovely day. The next FoDs social event is the Quiz on Saturday 16 October. Do sign yourselves up to this really fun and informal evening using the booking form attached.

Prep School Parents' Evenings
As per Mr Morgan's letter this week, Y3 and Y4 will have a short online parents’ evening a week on Monday, and Y5 and Y6 will have theirs before half term too. A great chance to touch base with key staff and get a sense of how your child has settled into the new academic year. A letter with details on how to log in to the online booking system will be sent out soon.

Harvest Assembly and Wimborne Foodbank Collection
On Monday Y2 will entertain us with their Harvest Assembly. Y2 parents are welcome to come and watch from the back of the hall - though we will broadcast this via Zoom too, as we do with all the other assemblies listed in the calendar. A reminder to all pupils to bring a donation to Wimborne Foodbank on Monday or Tuesday - they are particularly looking for the following items: UHT Milk, jam, custard, rice pudding, packs of porridge, men's & women's deodorant, washing pods and bottles of squash.  Needless to say, they will be most grateful for anything you are able to offer.  We're delighted that Sharon Keenan from Wimborne Foodbank will be coming to school on Tuesday morning to present to the children and collect our donations.

Music Timetable
Mr Moulton has asked me to remind parents that the music timetable will always be on the parent's area of the website before the weekend. If you're looking at it on a phone, you may need to turn your phone to landscape to be able to access and view it properly.  If any pupil is interested in taking up a musical instrument or having a tester lesson they should contact Mr Moulton in the first instance s.moulton@dumpton.com.

Other Events Next Week
Y1 and Y2 are opening their classrooms next week for a Meet the Teacher on Thursday after school. No need to make an appointment, the teachers look forward to seeing you there with your children, and having the chance to look at some of the work they have already done this year. A reminder that Lulu Luckock will be speaking to parents via Zoom about RULER on Thursday at 7.30pm to share some information about RULER, and give some advice about how you can incorporate this approach within your own home.

Finally, we have a Pre-Prep Coffee Morning on Friday at 8.30am, another lovely chance to meet some parents and build some links after a year when that has been so hard. Come to the Dining Hall after Drop-off and enjoy some tea, coffee and cake with old and new friends.

Inspection and Policies
Dumpton is very likely to have an inspection this year by ISI, the Independent Schools Inspectorate, and staff have been busy preparing behind the scenes.  We will let you know if and when the Inspectors arrive, and we will be asking for your help in filling in their parent survey ahead of their visit. Each year we also remind parents that all our key school policies are available via the Parents' Area of the website. At the same time, a reminder that the Chair of Governors, Mr Hugh Cocke, can be contacted directly at the following address - Dumpton School, Deans Grove, Wimborne, Dorset, BH21 7AF

Car Parking - please read
An accident in the car park involving a child doesn't bear thinking about. Please could I ask all parents to carefully note the below to keep all the children safe:

  • There should be no parking in the bottom car park during morning drop off. Please use the designated zones for drop off only.
  • Please keep your children under close supervision when in the car parks.
  • Please drive slowly observing the 5mph speed limit at all times.

Have a wonderful weekend.
With best wishes
