Dear Parents

Gervase Phinn
We were delighted to welcome Gervase Phinn, the well-known author and public speaker, to Dumpton this week.  Mr Phinn is famous for his poetry, children’s books and stories from his time as a schools’ inspector in ‘The Other Side of the Dales’.  He led a very entertaining Prep School Assembly on Monday morning, and then spent an hour with Year 4 conducting a Poetry Workshop.  After entertaining the English Department at lunch, he returned to read ‘Story’ to the junior years at 4.30 pm.  Not only generous with his time, he also left a big pile of his books for the School Library – and has promised to return again in the future.  We were all hugely grateful.

News from the Pre-Prep
The Year 1 and 2 Parents’ Evening takes place on Thursday (8 February).  We also have a Nursery Parents’ Coffee Morning the next day on Friday 9 February.  This also seems a good time to advertise our FoDS Easter Egg Hunt which will include hot cross buns and coffee for all the Nursery parents on the last day of term (Friday 23 March).  Please put the date in your diary.

IAPS National Finalists
Many congratulations to the U11 boys who have qualified for the IAPS National Hockey Finals.  They travelled to King’s, Bruton last Friday, winning their group matches against Monkton Prep and Warminster and then their quarter and semi-finals against Sherborne Prep and Castle Court. Despite losing narrowly, on sudden death penalty shuffles in the final, they now head for Tonbridge after half-term as National qualifiers.  Well done boys!

Year 7 Parents’ Evening
Thank you again for your positive response to the Year 5 Parents’ Evening this week. The Year 7 evening now follows next week on Tuesday 6 February. A big thank you should go to Mrs Sharp again for her faultless organisation.  If there are any parents that have not yet booked for the remaining 3 evenings this term please use the following link to the online booking system which you will need to type in your web browser www.dumptonschool.com/parentsevening

Sports Roundup
Well done, once again to Mrs Gray, the netball coaches and the senior girls on another excellent Senior (2nd/3rd/4th VII) Tournament on Wednesday.  Twenty-three sides battled it out on a bitterly cold afternoon.  We entered three teams who all played some great netball – and congratulations to the Dumpton girls on winning the tournament!    Well done also to the senior boys’ hockey teams on some outstanding results against Durlston Court on Wednesday, including a 9-0 win for the 1st VII and some convincing wins for the other sides.  There were also encouraging results right through the school, down to the U8 boys who had great fun on the astro!

Cross Country
Good luck to Iris C who will be representing Dorset at the South West Championships at Stover School, Newton Abbot this weekend.  Next week, we are bracing ourselves for one of the most keenly fought house competitions of the year.  Everyone will run cross-country during games time on the Friday (9 February).  The Dumpton Cross Country Course is currently not as muddy as it has been in the past, but older trainers might still be the order of the day rather than shiny new ones…

Lunchtime Concert
Just before the House Cross Country we look forward to a packed Lunchtime Concert next Friday (9 February) from 1.30 pm in the Recital Room.  Parents are all welcome, as ever.

FoDS Easter Lunch:
Message from FoDS:  A reminder that we are holding the annual Easter Lunch on Friday 16 March at the local and beautiful venue, 10 Castle Street, Cranborne from 12.00 noon - 3.00 pm.  Please join us for a delicious two or three course meal in a fantastic setting, with great company.  Lunch will be served on long tables, so there is no need to organise group bookings.  Please do e-mail fods@dumpton.com if you have any questions at all.  We look forward to seeing you there!

Best wishes

Andrew Browning
