Headmasters Newsletter, Friday 20 May 2022

Dear Parents,

As we approach the end of a highly successful and joyful first half of term (how has that happened?) there are so many lovely things to share in this letter. We’re particularly excited about next week, with Y5 and Y6 presenting both Oliver! performances, but also the ‘Family Afternoon’ to look forward to - please do read the note from Mrs Shaw to find out a bit more about this lovely community event that we hope you can all attend.

Looking ahead to September, I am delighted to announce two new appointments to the Dumpton teaching staff. Miss Alice Fisher joins us from Godolphin Prep where she has been their Pre-Prep teacher. Alice's creativity, enthusiasm and positivity shone through in what was a very competitive interview process, and we're delighted that she will join the growing Pre-Prep team as a Key Stage 1 teacher. Mr Tom Tridgell will join us from Bishop Fox's in Taunton, where he is a teacher of GCSE and A Level History and their lead mentor for initial teacher training. Tom is a keen sportsman and qualified hockey coach, and will take over as Head of History from Mr Price who retires this Summer. Both Alice and Tom are looking forward to joining us in school for our Moving Up Morning on the 6th July, where all children will meet their form teachers for next year.

Family Afternoon - From Mrs Shaw
We are so excited to open our doors to you all on Friday 27th May at 1.30pm for Pre-Prep, and 1.45pm for the Prep School. Please park in the field across the road, and then come and collect your child, and enjoy spending the afternoon with them, being able to show off their classrooms and work, and also enjoy some activities put on by departments. There will be performances, presentations, dancing, sports, outdoor activities and much more, and the schedule is attached below.  Pupils whose family are not coming will, of course, be looked after and will still have a fantastic time. At the end of the afternoon at 4.30pm, pupils will receive a Jubilee Gift from Dumpton Friends as they sign out.

Please, please please fill in this form to let us know if you are able to attend. We need this back by Tuesday latest... please don't give us too many people to chase!

Shoes and Clothes Collections
Thank you SO much for the shoe donations we have received so far. We have extended the collection and it will now finish at the clothing swap (see below), so there is a little more time if you were planning to have a sort out!

Whilst you are digging out your pre-loved shoes for our Sal's Shoes collection, we will raise funds to post the shoes to where they are needed, by holding a Clothes Swap: sustainable and charitable.

We will collect clothes for children from 2-13 years old, including accessories, in the Front Hall, with the shoe collection, during the week after half term. Year 3 will sort the clothes out, and they will be on sale for £2 per item, £1 for accessories, on Wednesday 15th and Thursday 16th June, at pickup. Please donate any good quality clothes that you think could have another life.  Any questions to Mrs Brass at o.brass@dumpton.com

Fantastic Trips
Y3 visited Kimmeridge, Y4 went to The Lighthouse, Poole, to watch the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, and Y7 were conducting some fieldwork in the New Forest.  I know all the children gained so much from these excursions, and the teachers who took them were delighted with their behaviour and manners - very good to hear!

Reception Pet Show
One of the highlights of the Dumpton calendar, we had a brilliant pet show this afternoon. Thank you to all the parents for coming to support the day, and the children did a superb job showing off all their pets and telling the judges all about them: plenty of dogs cats, and even some pet worms!

Drumming Assembly
There was some serious Rock'n'Roll in assembly yesterday, as Josh G, Evie O, Zoe W and Hugo M wowed us all with drumming performances. From Queen to AC/DC to The Jam, it was a really musical education for the pupils too! Thank you to Mr Bennet for his excellent and enthusiastic teaching - it’s lovely to see so many pupils learning the drums at Dumpton at the moment.

Cricketing Thrills
Some superb fixtures against Sandroyd this week. Leo C nearly had a hatrick, Zoe W nearly secured a brilliant comeback for the U13A Girls, the U8s continued their unbeaten sporting season, and the U11A Boys came out with a superb victory, with Samuel C scoring 27 not out in his first ever game of competitive cricket. Thank you to all the coaches, and the spectators too, for their support.

Junior Maths Challenge - From Mr Smith, Head of Maths
Earlier this month, pupils from Years 7 and Year 8 took part in the UKMT Junior Maths Challenge.  The top scorers were as follows:

Jon A (Best in School) & Joe K - Gold Certificates
Ethan C, Oliver L, Zoe W, Alice H, Zak H, Josh DLH, Nicholas L & Heidi S - Silver Certificates

Jon's excellent score means he has qualified for the next round, the Junior Kangaroo, which he will attempt next month.  Congratulations Jon.

Summer Holiday Clubs
As you are aware, our popular Summer Holiday Clubs will take place during the first two weeks of the summer holidays.  To book a place for your child, please use the appropriate form below.

Exciting Site Developments
In our recent parent survey, the quality of Dumpton’s facilities and site scored very highly indeed - and it is testament to the school's success and financial stability over the last two decades that so many major developments have taken place recently (Science Laboratories, Music Recital Rooms, Sports Hall). Though capital expenditure projects have been paused over the last couple of years, we are committed to continuing to ensure the school site and our facilities offer a first-class environment for the pupils. This Summer, the ground floor of the Pre-Prep will be refurbished to create space for our Nursery room, our Pre-School room and both Reception classrooms. The whole Nursery Garden will also be resurfaced and re-designed, and at the same time we will be creating a new more welcoming parent waiting area for both Prep and Pre-Prep parents. In addition, we will be re-surfacing the Netball and Tennis Courts - it will be a busy Summer, but my thanks to Justin Perry the Bursar and the site team for all their efforts here.

May I take this opportunity to wish you all a lovely weekend.
