Dear Parents

Autumn Stroll

I would like to start with a big ‘thank you’ to all parents and pupils for supporting this event at the weekend.  We had a delightful afternoon, and Steph’s cakes were, as ever, delicious.  Thank you also to the FoDS Committee for their hosting and organisation behind the scenes.

Future Schools Presentation

Next week, on Thursday evening (28 September) I will be inviting all current parents to a talk about the many possibilities of schooling post-Dumpton.  A glass of wine or similar will be available from 7.30 pm, and we would be grateful if likely attendees could confirm by email (secretary@dumpton.com) or telephone (01202-883818) so that we can cater accordingly.  Thank you.

Common Entrance Pre-Tests

This term Canford and Bryanston are embarking on Common Entrance Pre-Testing for the first time, in Year 6 and 7 respectively.  Parents have been contacted and prep time sessions are all in place, giving pupils a chance to build momentum before the on-line assessments in November.  This is just a final call for last minute additions to the lists.

Harvest Festival

The Pre-Prep and Prep School will celebrate Harvest Festival, with the Assembly on Tuesday 26 September led by Year 2, as is our tradition.  Harvest gifts will be collected for the Wimborne Food Bank.  We are inviting each pupil in the Pre-Prep and Prep School to bring no more than one can of food or similar into school on Monday next week.

The suggestions for donations on the website include biscuits, UHT milk, squash, pasta, tinned/powdered potatoes, pasta sauce, tinned spaghetti/macaroni, tinned rice pudding, tinned soup, porridge oats, washing up liquid, washing powder/laundry liquid, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo and soap.  Strong plastic bags with reinforced handles are always needed. Any gift will be gratefully received, of course, and will be collected by the class or form teacher and taken down to the Assembly Hall.

Thank you, in advance, for your contributions.  Reverend Robert Jones, who oversees the project, will be speaking to the Prep School pupils on Tuesday 3 October.  This is an important local charity touching the lives of many.  In 2017 they have already fed 808 people including around 369 children.

Year 5 Camp

The Year 5 children have had a lovely time paddle-boarding and coasteering on the Purbecks over the past two days.  They will return back to school between 11 am and 11.30 am tomorrow, probably in need of a few extra hours sleep over the weekend….

News from the sportsfield

Once again Mr Randle has worked hard to get as many pupils as possible on the sportsfield this week, with nearly 200 selected to represent the school in 20 different teams – including another ambitious eight school U9 Girls Hockey Festival at home.  Congratulations to all the footballers who attended the Moyles Court Tournament – this year the U13 and U11 sides amazingly won both competitions!  Well done also to the 1st VII girls hockey who continued their impressive start to the season with a third place at the competitive Canford Tournament.

FoDS Quiz Night

The FoDs Quiz Night is nearly upon us (Saturday 14 October).  Do come along and enjoy the fun, pitting your wits against the Headmaster. A flyer is attached to this e-mail and a hard copy should be on its way home to you too.

Looking ahead to this academic year (2017-18) we will need to build a new committee, and would be grateful to anyone who would like to step forward as Chair or Vice-Chair.  In addition, to keep FoDS active at all levels of the school, it has been proposed that we invite a representative from each form in the Prep School and each class in the Pre-Prep to be involved. This would give us a very healthy number of parents to share the load, and allow a conduit for information between the school and individual year groups, where appropriate.

If you would like to know more about the role of the Friends of Dumpton within the school or are interested in joining the committee please contact me, or send an email to fods@dumpton.com – we can promise you a very warm welcome.

Year 3 Minibus Service – Thursday evenings

A Year 3 minibus service will commence from Thursday, 28 September to Penn Hill and Glenferness Avenue. Anyone wishing to use the service should book online at https://dumpton.route-r.co.uk/  (you will only be recognised if you use the email address you have registered with the school if you are using the system for the first time). Full booking instructions are available in the Parents section of the website. For those parents changing buses, please go to Book-A-Bus for a Selected Date section at https://dumpton.route-r.co.uk/ to make your changes to the Thursday Year 3 minibus. If you experience any issues please contact busadmin@dumpton.com

Advance Warning - Road Closure – Smugglers Lane

Dorset County Council has informed us that Smugglers Lane (on the stretch up the hill towards St Michael’s) will be closed between 9 am and 4 pm Monday – Friday next week (25 September – 29 September).  Hopefully this will have minimum impact in the mornings as it is after drop-off, but Pre-Prep and Year 3 pick-up will be significantly affected in the afternoons.

Sunday Beach Clean

Mrs Sharp will be on hand to welcome interested pupils and parents to the beautiful Worbarrow Bay for a beach clean this Sunday (prompt start at 1 pm). For full details please visit the DWT website under events.  Please park at Tyneham between Lulworth Cove and Kimmeridge Bay, follow the footpath to the beach (approx. 1 mile) and meet at the entrance to the beach - all equipment is provided (but please bring a drink and suitable footwear for a shingle beach).

With best wishes

Andrew Browning

PS Good luck to all those pupils attending the Grammar School tests tomorrow …
