Dear Parents

Parents’ Evenings
Thank you to all those who have booked their appointments on the Parents’ Evening booking system.  Mrs Sharp has asked me to remind you of a couple of points for future meetings.  Firstly, could you please bring a copy of the appointments on the evening, and secondly could you check that you have made appointments for all the teachers you would like to see – there will be very little leeway for further appointments on the night.  Thank you in advance for this.

The Year 5 Evening follows next week on Tuesday 30 January and we look forward to catching up with many of you then.  Children will be supervised in the Green Room (next door to the Recital Room) after the end of school on Parents’ Evenings if required.

Nathan Myhrvold
We were delighted to welcome Nathan Myhrvold to Dumpton on Monday this week. Formerly Chief Technology Officer at Microsoft, Mr Myhrvold led the development of Windows software and has an international reputation in the field of IT.  He is co-founder of Intellectual Ventures and the principal author of the six volume, 2400 page ‘Modernist Cuisine’ cookbook.  During the morning he gave a talk to Year 8 pupils and ICT Department, touching on his many current interests, including contemporary cooking, the provision of safer nuclear power and international disease control – a fascinating eclectic mix!

FoDS Easter Lunch
Message from FoDS:  After the success of last year’s lunch at 10 Castle Street, Cranborne we will be holding another FoDS event on Friday 16 March again at the same venue from 12.00pm – 3.00pm.  A copy of the menu is attached together with a booking form – please simply complete the form and return (together with payment) to fods@dumpton.com or the FoDS box in the Front Office.  There is no need to book as a group as seating will be on one or two large tables.

Mathematics
Mrs Sharp has asked me to highlight that Mr Smith has recently updated the useful Maths calculation guidelines (Years 3 – 6) which are available on the Parents’ Area of our website.  A handy reference if you would like to see the techniques taught to the children in their maths lessons. http://www.dumpton.com/Parents-Maths.aspx.

County Champions!
Congratulations to the U13 boys who were successful at the Dorset County Hockey Championships last Friday.  They won all five of their fixtures on the day, which included Castle Court, Sherborne Prep and Clayesmore Prep. They now head for the South West Championships at Millfield in April.

News from the Sportsfield
We have had another busy sporting week, despite the wind and the rain, which sadly caused the cancellation of netball fixtures. I was impressed by the spirit shown by all the pupils in the 12 hockey teams, and they were rewarded with competitive games, encouraging results and some very exciting moments.  Next week, we will be hosting a large Netball Tournament here on Wednesday afternoon, alongside the usual hockey fixtures.

World Food Day
Year 2 enjoyed a wonderful day full of food and cooking from all around the world today!  Mrs Brown introduced them to the tastes of exotic food from China and India teaching about the origin and use of various spices and even their medicinal value.  They have tried black fungus, lotus root and tofu to name but a few!

Request from Matron
As we are now very much in the middle of the colds and flu season, Cathy Stokes has asked if you would ring through absences as early as possible each day so that registers can be completed first thing in the morning. Alternatively, please email to matron@dumpton.com if this is easier for you.

Yours sincerely
