Dear Parents

"Once again thank you for inviting me to your wonderful school. I had some very special and insightful conversations with your students, and I feel that is to the credit of you and the school." Jemma Roye

It was a joyous and colourful day today, to end a week where we have all been incredibly proud of the school and our pupils. As well as a host of memorable Christmas performances (more on those below), the way that our pupils responded to our theme for the week - Equality and Diversity - was really quite heart-warming. On Monday, Jemma Roye from SOAR Academic delivered workshops to each Prep School year group on some weighty topics to do with race and racism - and the response from our pupils in terms of their maturity, their interest, and their empathy was exceptional. Dr Preet Bachra from Bryanston also introduced some thought-provoking and complex themes with the Y8 Academic Scholars, whilst throughout the school we looked to celebrate our differences and cherish our diversity in assemblies and PSHE sessions, all rounded off by an explosion of colour today. The children were brilliantly forthright about their determination that the world should be an equal place, a fair place, and an inclusive place for all. The future is in very safe hands.

Nursery and Reception Christmas Shows
Thursday's Christmas Shows were joyous! For most parents (including yours truly) this was the first time they had seen their children perform at Dumpton. The singing, the dancing, the costumes, the humour, and most notably the pupils' growing, burgeoning confidence were an absolute delight to see. Thank you to Mrs Bolter, and also to the outstanding Nursery and Reception teams for all their efforts.

Y1 to Y3 Christmas Performances Next Week
We are looking forward to the Y1 and Y2 Christmas performances on Monday (Y2 parents) and Tuesday (Y1 parents), followed by the Y3 performance of Starlight on Friday. All three performances will be filmed and available for you to watch via a link before the end of term.

Scholarship Success
We are all very proud of Alfie A-I and Zak J, both of whom have been awarded scholarships to Clayesmore. Alfie won a Sports Scholarship, whilst Zak won both a Sports Scholarship and a DT Scholarship. Well done to them both!

Instrumental Music
What a treat yesterday to see all of Year 2 demonstrating their talents on violins, cellos and clarinets - all part of the Y2 instrumental music programme. A huge thank you to Mrs Botler for all her work with Year 2, who she thinks are such a dedicated bunch. We really hope a number of those pupils will be interested in pursuing individual lessons at Dumpton in the future. We were joined by Fraser B during that session who played a wonderful Bach Concerto to show us where the pupils might end up in a few years time. And I can't not mention Charlie R's performance in assembly yesterday morning, where him and Mr Nye just decided to 'jam' for us all. The video on twitter is really worth a watch....

Sporting Exploits
Some brilliant girls football and boys rugby matches against Port Regis this week, who are always a very competitive fixture for us. Well done to all involved. Special mention goes to the U11As who competed in a tournament at Stroud School against 12 of the best Prep School teams in the South West, most of whom were 'one term' rugby schools. For our team to come 4th overall was a really impressive effort.

Pre-Prep Spring Term Hobbies
We wrote to Pre-Prep parents to announce two new hobbies for the Spring Term - Dance, and Arts and Crafts - to go along with the very popular Dramarama and Mini-Kickers. This is a  reminder to all parents to sign up for hobbies by next Wednesday to secure your child's place for the Spring Term.

Mood Meter
If you walk into a classroom at Dumpton, you may find a dash of colour up on the walls - quadrants of yellow, green, blue and red, which together make up the 'Mood Meter'. This is one of the anchor tools of the RULER approach, helping children to identify and label their emotions. We've seen some brilliant examples of the mood meter helping children manage situations of conflict or upset, and it has been so uplifting to hear stories from classrooms about how the Mood Meter is building emotional literacy at Dumpton. Lulu Luckock will be running a session on the Mood Meter aimed at parents next week on Tuesday (7th December) at 7.30pm via Zoom.

Y5 - World Toilet Day
Year 5 have been working hard this week helping out at home and giving up things they enjoy, in order to experience a little 'hardship' and raise money to provide safe water and toilet facilities for communities in the developing world.  They have been sleeping on the floor, avoiding electronics, giving up favourite foods and washing up with Oscar D even washing up his own plate whilst out for dinner!  We look forward to seeing how much they manage to raise and how they decide to spend it - Mrs Cox will keep you posted!

Y6 Charity Fundraisers
Well done to Nathan S, Alexa M, Alice F and Sabela S-V in Y6 who showed a real 'you can because you think you can' attitude, and set up a cake sale for staff to raise money for our two charities this week. Well done to them all for their initiative, determination and thoughtfulness.

We are recruiting for two key members of staff to join our team in the New Year. Firstly, a Part Time Matron to replace the irreplaceable Cathy Stokes who retires at Christmas. Secondly, a Nursery Practitioner (Maternity Cover) to join our superb Nursery team once Mrs Boughton heads off on maternity leave in January. Do see the website for more details and spread the word amongst those you know.

End of Term
As per the calendar, please note the end of term arrangements on Wednesday 15th December, where we have a half day for all due to the Carol Service.
