Headmaster's Newsletter, Friday 4 October

Dear Parents,

Our Open Morning for prospective parents today had record attendance. Well done to those Year 8 pupils who welcomed families to the school so maturely, and to all the pupils and staff who showed off the school in its very best light. I spoke for a few minutes to all the prospective parents about Dumpton, our wonderful facilities, the superb offering for our pupils, and, just as importantly, the warmth, positivity and kindness of the community that they as a family would be joining. Thank you to you all for the important part you play in maintaining the 'special' atmosphere that Dumpton is well known for.

It has been a busy week again here at Dumpton, and it is wonderful to see so many of you now following us on Twitter (https://twitter.com/Dumpton). Sometimes busy parents can feel a little distanced from what goes on at school; using tools like Twitter to share the highlights of our week with the school community is a lovely way to combat this. I look forward to exploring how we might develop this even further in the coming weeks and months.

To the following pupils in the Prep School who have received the most merits so far this term! I will mention them all in Assembly on Monday, and look forward to celebrating more individuals for their effort and behaviour around school over the coming weeks.  Charlie R (4A), Cameron C (7C), Henrietta H (4A),  Kitty M (4A), Alexander S (4A), William C (5P), Oscar W (5P), Austin R (4A), Lissy A (5P) and Nathan S (4C).

Outside the Classroom: Sport and Music
Seeing children thrive in their exploits outside the classroom is always a highlight of my week, and the sports fixtures this Tuesday and Wednesday, where Dumpton pupils of all ages and abilities represented the school so well, were as enjoyable as ever. Thursday morning is our weekly 'Music Assembly', and we were treated this week to our pianists who all delivered some very impressive performances. For our younger musicians, seeing our older pupils perform with such skill and musicality is a real incentive for them all.  As I reminded all pupils in assembly.... "You can because you think you can!"

News from the Pre-Prep
Reception performed harvest songs at Streets Meadow Residential Home yesterday. The residents were able to join in with many of the rhymes, which everyone enjoyed very much. Oliver S helped Year 1 to celebrate the Jewish Festival of Rosh Hashanah, with apples dipped in honey and pomegranate seeds, for a sweet and plentiful New Year.  Year 2 had the opportunity to show parents their Harvest Assembly, which they performed beautifully and were very excited to be given their own individual log in for ‘Mathletics’, a computer based maths programme.  Looking ahead to next week Years 1 and 2 will be holding informal Open Afternoons beginning from 3.40pm.  These are opportunities for children to show parents their work so far this term.  Further details have already been sent to parents in a separate letter.

Christmas Shoeboxes
I spoke on Monday in Assembly to the Prep School about us once again making up Christmas shoeboxes of presents for children from Eastern Europe who, otherwise, would receive little.  This year we will be sending the boxes to The Rotary Club, who will be forwarding them overseas to children in need.  If you would like to participate, please could you deliver your boxes, wrapped in Christmas paper to the Front Hall after half-term. There is a flyer containing further information attached to this letter and a leaflet will soon be with you.

A Message from FoDS
We are now planning events for the upcoming year with the support of Mr Saenger and are looking for further support from parents in the form of new volunteers to join our current committee.  We will be hosting a variety of events for the children and parents throughout the year and as a FoDs committee member you can be involved in just one or all of the events planned.  It is a flexible role and can fit around you.  We work as a team, so whether you are an ideas person or a practical type of person, there is a role for you!  We do require a “Treasurer” as this role is currently vacant.  Details of this position can be discussed in person if it is something that appeals to you.  Please feel free to contact us if you are interested in joining our team via the FoDs email fods@dumpton.com

Revision Lists for Year 7 and Year 8
The exams are still some time away but for those families wishing to make an early start, Mrs Rielly has asked me to let you know that the revision lists are now available on the Parents’ Area of the website.

Looking Ahead to Next Week
A group of Year 7 and Year 8 pupils will be attending a Geography Quiz at Canford on Monday (7 October) afternoon and a group of senior pupils will be taking part in a Prep School Orchestral Day at Bryanston on Tuesday (8 October).  On Thursday (10 October), we have the Year 3 Parents’ Evening, which will take place in the Recital Room.  A reminder that the online booking system will be live until Wednesday 9 October.

With best wishes,
Christian Saenger

PS Please remember to place your individual school photograph orders online – the deadline is Friday 11 October.
