Headmasters Newsletter, Friday 6 May 2022

Dear Parents

It has been the most wonderful week here at Dumpton. The sun has shone and the children have spent so much time outside - whether on various trips, through their sport, or simply by enjoying those all so important play times. Reception spent the day exploring fossils on Monday, Y2 were voyaged to Round Island on Tuesday, and Y6 have all week been having the most superb time in North Devon at Skern Lodge, surfing, climbing, leaping, exploring, cycling and challenging themselves along that glorious coastline. Do check the pictures on social media for a taste of all their fantastic exploits: https://www.dumpton.com/school-news

Our theme for this week was Global Citizenship - and I am always so impressed by how keen Dumpton pupils are to help others and to have awareness of global issues like equality, poverty and the environment. As Mother Teresa is meant to have said'I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples'. I think this is a powerful message for any young child to take with them - and we are sure that the Sal's Shoes initiative below will be treated with the typical Dumpton gusto and generosity

Sal's Shoes - Help Required!
As part of our Global Citizenship theme, Mrs Shaw spoke to the Prep School children about Sal's Shoes - a charity that collects and distributes outgrown but not outworn shoes to children who are in need of them, to protect their feet, prevent injury and infection, or to allow them to attend school. They send shoes all over the world, including recently to Ukrainian refugees and also to people in need in this country too. Shoes are so difficult to recycle that we think this is an all-round good thing. If you are having a clearout then we would love to receive your shoes!

Please check that they are outgrown but not outworn, don’t have holes in soles, have laces if they need them, have had a quick clean and are rubber banded in pairs. They can accept shoes of any size from baby to adult, ballet, football, astro, party shoes, as well as trainers, shoes, boots and wellies.  Please drop in Reception from Monday through to Friday, and we will do another collection at the end of term. We will do a collection and some fundraising later in the term to allow the charity to ship the shoes where they are needed. See salsshoes.com for more information.

Cricket Fixtures
We had nearly 200 children playing cricket this week against Salisbury Cathedral School and others. We were blessed with perfect weather for cricket, and how wonderful to see the progress children are making and both boys and girls enjoying the sport together. The match reports are all on the Dumpton Sports Website as they are each week (https://www.dumptonsport.com/). A special well done to the U10A Team for competing so well at the Canford Tournament too.

Scholarship Success and Scholarship Presentation to Parents
Overall we are so proud to have secured 19 different scholarships this year, with record numbers of academic scholarships to Canford, as well as Sport, Drama and DT scholarships to schools like Bryanston, Clayesmore and BCS. If you are interested in finding out more about how scholarships to Senior Schools work, do come along to my presentation at 7.30pm on Tuesday evening which will now take place remotely via the usual Zoom link. Y7 parents may be particularly interested, but parents from younger age groups are very welcome indeed.

Musical Ducklings - Move to Tuesdays
Due to an unforeseen clash, Musical Ducklings will now take place on Tuesdays at the same time and same place as previously advertised. The first session begins this Tuesday at 8.30 - sign in at Reception and then you'll be shown over to the Recital Hall if you are unsure where it is! Please confirm your attendance with Juliet Siggers (j.siggers@dumpton.com), and Mrs Saenger and Mrs Mudd look forward to seeing you there

3B and 1G Class Assemblies
We were treated to two fantastic class assemblies this week - 1G with a brilliant pirate themed occasion, and then 3B giving a brilliant and thoughtful assembly on Global Citizenship. Thank you to all the parents who came to watch, and bravo to the children involved!

Oliver! Tickets
Tickets are now available for what is swiftly becoming a very hotly anticipated event - the Y5/Y6 Musical that we are all so excited about. There are limited seats for the performances (3 tickets per performer), so please click on this link to secure your place and find out more by Friday 13th May. Do bear in mind that siblings of performers will all have watched the dress rehearsals earlier that day:

Vacancy - Student Teaching Assistant
We are advertising again for an 'STA' to join us for the next academic year. If you know of any motivated, kind, hardworking youngsters interested in working at Dumpton for a year, do point them in our direction.

With best wishes
