Dear Parents

Open Afternoon
I would like to start by saying a really big thank you to Steph Jones and her team in the kitchens and Simon Ward, Keith Randle, Adam Hargreaves and Peter Dearlove on the grounds for their hard work in preparation for Open Afternoon.  Thanks also to Mrs Watkiss who organised all the music.  Congratulations to the boys and the girls who beat their parents comfortably in the cricket and rounders matches and well done to Massimo B and his Dad, Tim who won the Parent and Pupil Tennis Tournament.

Year 8 Leavers’ Course
We are now bracing ourselves for arguably the busiest four weeks of the school year. Mr Loe has been building the much-awaited Leavers’ Course, providing Year 8 with probably the most educationally varied time of their school careers to date.  They will soon be under canvas on an Adventure Camp, and will progress through an impressive range of activities including Business Enterprise, Dragons’ Den, Self-Defence, Scuba Diving, CSI Dumpton, along with a French Day and visits to the Tate St Ives, the Eden Project, the Minack Theatre and Surf School.

French Exchange
I would like to thank the families who are supporting the French Exchange by hosting one of the students.  Their arrival always adds a new dimension to life at school and I must thank Madame Tulodziecki for her organisation of the project again this year.

Year 4 and 5 Gospel Day
Next Tuesday we welcome Ken Burton back to Dumpton. After his successful visit last year, he will once again be preparing Year 4 and 5 pupils for concerts here at Dumpton.  The Year 5’s will perform at 1.30 pm in the Recital Room, and the Year 4’s later at 4.30 pm.  These events were very warmly received last year and again parents are welcome at either concert (or both)!

Prep School Sports Day: Message from the Director of Sport (a.randle@dumpton.com)
Our Prep School Sports Day is scheduled for Wednesday 19 June and it is now time for children to choose their events using the form that you have already received by email from Mr Randle.  At the time of writing, we have had 100 responses. For those who are new or currently in Year 3 children are asked to choose either 2 track events and 1 field event OR 1 track event and 2 field events that they will enter on the day.

Children can only enter once so should think carefully about their choices. Please would parents add their email address to the form so they can receive an email reminder of the choices entered.  Any pupils who miss the interactive deadline (Sunday 9 June) can complete a paper version of the form whilst at school.  As we get closer to the day, we will advise on all other details about how the afternoon will run.

Message from FoDS: ‘A Fond Farewell’ Gala – Saturday 15 June
For those attending, arrival at Dean’s Court will be from 6.30pm for welcome drinks & canapes. FoDS will be holding an auction in support of Awake Mercy. You can visit (web page address to follow) to review the lots and place your bids. The auction is open to all, not just guests of the gala. Happy bidding….

Message from FoDS: Summer Family Picnic – Thursday 4 July – SAVE THE DATE!
Plans for the Summer Family Picnic have now crystallised. The event will start at 3.30 pm (for the Pre-Prep) and 4.15 pm (for the Prep School) continuing through to 7.00pm, weather permitting.  Pupils will wear mufti that day, and be handed over to parents as they arrive for the event. There will be the usual food stalls, with a few new additions, and lots of entertainment for the children.  Buses will run as normal for those children not attending.  Full details will follow in next week’s letter.

Speech Day – Friday 5 July
I would like to give advance notice of Speech Day at the end of term.  As there are many amongst you who will not have attended this day before, I should start by saying all members of the school community are invited.  This makes for a very full marquee and a considerable age range, but you should be reassured that formal proceedings should be over before noon.  We hope to see you all there.

Children generally sit with their parents, apart from Year 8 and the musicians who will sit as two groups towards the front. There are no buses on that morning and no lessons - the day begins at 10.00 prompt.  There will be a glass of Pimms or similar available thereafter for all, as we wish each other well for the summer.

And finally…
Good luck to the swimmers Amelia C, Grace C, Annabel C and Emily K who will be representing Dumpton at the IAPS Nationals at the Olympic Park tomorrow.  Similarly, best wishes to all the athletes competing at Junior Wessex and the Dorset Athletics Championships.  We will report back next week.

With best wishes
Andrew Browning
