Dear Parents

Further Scholarship News
Many congratulations to James B on his Sports Scholarship to Millfield, Josh S on his Sports Scholarship to Clayesmore and Angus W on his Academic Scholarship to Bryanston – bringing the total of awards to 17 with some outcomes still pending.

Eco-Science Day
Peter Milne, from Target4Green will be in school on Monday to speak to the Prep School in Assembly and run a series of workshops from Year 3 through to Year 8.  Topics will include environmental issues, waste management and sustainable development, and pupils will consider a range of case studies from around the world.  The school’s Eco Council will also host a lunch and ‘think-tank’ with Mr Milne in the Front Hall to discuss the part children can play in affecting change.

School Allotments
As the weather changes and we start to look to sunnier days, the pupils are starting to mass at the gates of the School Allotments at lunchtime each day.  We are busy planting seeds and already have the Year 3 Potato Challenge in place.  We now welcome other pupil-initiated growing projects, whether individual or team based.  There are lots of recycled plastic raised beds and a polytunnel available – all we ask is that children bring a pair of wellington boots and some gardening gloves, if possible.

From the Chair of FODS
Summer Ball tickets will go on sale from Monday 13 March. Please see the attached flyer and booking form.  Details of the Easter Egg Hunt and Competition taking place on the last day of this term will be sent home in book bags next week.

Puccini’s Messa di Gloria
This evening the Bryanston Choral Society are performing Puccini’s beautiful choral work Messa di Gloria at The Lighthouse, Poole, accompanied by a professional orchestra and  a massed choir of around 320 singers, including sixteen Year 5-8 Dumptonians, in a combined Prep School Choir. The first half of the concert will include an orchestral overture and music by Glazunov, Ravel, Chaminade and Saint-Saëns.  Well done to all the pupils involved tonight – I am sure all those early morning rehearsals will now pay off!

News from the Pre-Prep
Year 2 thoroughly enjoyed their visit to SafeWise on Tuesday.  They learnt about potential dangers in the everyday world around them in a safe and controlled environment.  The coming days are set to be busy with outings for Reception to Farmer Palmers on Friday (17 March), Year 1 to Streets Meadow on Thursday (16 March) and Year 2 have their Drumming Day with Noah on Friday (17 March).

IAPS South-West and Dorset Schools Netball
The U12/13 girls did us proud at their IAPS Regional Tournament last Friday.  Both teams battled hard through the day, coming third in very competitive fields.  The U13 girls missed out on the Nationals by the narrowest of margins, losing on a ‘golden goal’ to Farleigh in the semi-finals.  Both teams bounced back impressively from this disappointment, winning through their group at the Dorset Schools Championships, against some schools with 150+ girls to choose from.  In the end, the U13 side were runners-up in a keenly fought final, while the U12 side came an encouraging 3rd place.  Very well done to all.

Sports Report
There was the usual array of fixtures on Wednesday afternoon, with highlights including the 1st VII boys’ hockey side coming runners-up at the King Edward VII, Southampton tournament, while the U11 girls’ netball team were also runners-up at the BCS tournament.  Meanwhile, the 2nd VII netball side played very well in beating the 1st VII from Forres Sandle Manor, while the 1st VII girls lost narrowly to an excellent 1st VII from Farleigh.

Iceland calling
Once again Mrs Sharp and Mr Nye are planning an exciting trip to Iceland for Years 6-8 next March 2018 and all parents in these year groups should have received notification.  Thank you to all parents who are able to support this – Mrs Sharp is delighted that the trip will go ahead – please do contact her at c.sharp@dumpton.com if you would still like your son or daughter to take part.
