Dear Parents

What a superb week it has been. Yes, the sun has been shining, the weather warm and spring-like! But the children have returned with such positivity, confidence and purpose. The summer term is a short one, so it’s brilliant to see everyone hit the ground running so well this week. A special mention to the new pupils who started this week, who have settled in brilliantly, and as ever, been welcomed so warmly by our current pupils. I am sure the same will be true of the parents!

As if we didn’t have enough of a spring in our step already, we also received some wonderful news today. Dumpton has been shortlisted for ‘Best Prep School of the Year’ in the TES School Awards 2026. These awards - often knowns as ‘the Oscars’ of education - are highly competitive, and span both the independent and state sector. Our nomination was based on our school values and culture, the impact of our character education provision, and the academic and scholarship outcomes of our pupils. It’s wonderful recognition for our extraordinary staff team who have worked so hard over the last few years to ensure that the education at Dumpton continues to set the highest standards, and the amazing progress of our children. The Award Winners will be announced in June – do keep your fingers crossed for us, and I hope you are just as proud of the school as we are.

New Head of Lower Prep
I am delighted to announce that Mrs Vicki Wellman has been appointed as our new Head of Lower Prep. Vicki is a primary specialist who currently teaches at Chafyn Grove School in Salisbury. We were overwhelmed by the interest in this new role and the quality of the applicants we received, but Vicki’s superb teaching and rapport with the children, as well as her clear alignment with Dumpton’s values, shone through. She will be visiting later this term and she can’t wait to get to know the pupils, and you as parents of course.

Head of Art
Mr Tim Loe, our current Head of Art, will be retiring at the end of this academic year. We will have a proper chance to thank him for all he has done later this term, but we are now advertising for a new Head of Art. This is a superb opportunity for a talented, passionate and inspiring art teacher, and we’re expecting another very strong field for the role. Do spread the word!

Primary Maths Challenge – Extraordinary Achievement!
Congratulations to Elizabeth X and Mia D who both attempted the Bonus Round of the Primary Maths Challenge last term. Mia missed out on a certificate by just three marks and Elizabeth did fantastically well to score full marks. Elizabeth was only one of 85 pupils in the country to achieve full marks! Given over 61,000 pupils took part in the PMC, and only 3100 scored highly enough to be invited to participate in the Bonus Round, this represents an extraordinary achievement. Very well done!

Martha Makes History
We’re incredibly proud of Martha AI in Year 8. On Sunday, she made her debut for Dorset Women’s cricket team in their fixture against Cambridgeshire becoming, at 13, the youngest debutant in the history of the competition. Not only that, Martha hit the winning runs for Dorset, and has been selected again to play this week. Martha’s hard work and determined approach set a brilliant example to all.

All You Need to Know About Future Schools
Next week Mr Morgan and I will be running our annual webinar aimed at Prep School parents exploring and considering their next steps after Dumpton. If you are new to the school, or you haven’t attended before, I would recommend you join for a whistle stop tour of schools, admission processes, scholarships, bursaries, and how we can support you and your child here at Dumpton. As a proud Prep School, we’re determined to support every single family on this journey, whatever your child’s future destination.

Dumpton Friends Coffee Morning
Thank you to the Dumpton Friends for another lovely coffee morning this morning. It was lovely to welcome so many parents, old and new, on such a beautiful sunny morning too.

Old Dumptonian Day and Cricket Match
On Saturday 16 May we are hosting an Old Dumptonian Day, including a 20/20 cricket match with an Old Dumptonian XI playing the Dumpton Ducks parents and staff team. If you know any Old Dumptonians interested in joining the day, do spread the word. The same goes for any keen cricketers on the parent body who may want to join the Ducks – they have a number of fixtures this summer as well as net sessions for anyone rusty.

With best wishes for a lovely weekend.
