Dear Parents
I overheard two of our pupils this week having the most heart-warming conversation. It went something like this:
Pupil A: "I think you're really kind because you always include people."
Pupil B: "Well I think you are really good at aiming high because you never give up"
I nearly wept tears of joy!
Parents at Dumpton will know how important our values are to us. Being Kind and Aiming High sit at the very heart of our culture. They set the standard, give us a shared language, and shape the behaviours we expect and celebrate every day. In an increasingly complex world (anyone keeping up with the news at the moment?) having a clear sense of values matter more than ever. So at Dumpton, we are determined that our values are lived, not just laminated. Hearing children speak about our values so naturally is a sign we are getting this right, but thank you to you as parents for the part you play here. As we begin our 2030 conversation this term, one thing will remain constant: our values will continue to sit at the heart of everything we do.
Navigating a childhood of Screens, Smartphones and Social Media - Thursday 5 February at 8pm (online talk)
I make no apology for pushing this one again, I do want us all to engage in this topic, and wherever we might sit on the debate, I hope it will be an enlightening one. I saw this quote this week - a thought provoking one for us all!
"When we hand our children screens we steal their boredom from them. As a result, we are a generation of writers who will never start writing, artists who will never start doodling, chef's who will never make a mess of the kitchen, and athletes who will never kick a ball against a wall, musicians who will never pick up their aunt's guitar and start strumming." Vikki Slade - Our Local MP
We were delighted to host Vikki in our Prep and Pre-Prep assemblies on Monday. It was fascinating for the pupils to hear from her about life in Westminster, and the important role all of us can play - even children - in terms of democracy and having a voice and say in the decisions made. Given our politicians haven't showered themselves in glory in recent years, it was a lovely refreshing interaction - and a reminder to me that however we might feel, it is so important the next generation feel a sense of possibility and optimism in our democracy...
Netball and Hockey
It was so lovely to see our Prep School pupils getting stuck into their new sports this term. The girls made a brilliant start with Netball, with returning Lead Netball coach Jess Ferrand working her magic across the school again with all age groups. The boys have also made a strong start on the astro with their hockey - and a big thank you to all the parents who came to support fixtures!
Road Closure - Reminder
A reminder that the road closure on Smugglers Lane will now begin on Monday 19 January, and last until Thursday 22 January inclusive, between the times of 9:00 and 16:00. To help things run as smoothly and safely as possible during this time, we will be introducing a one-way system for accessing the school site. Please arrive from the bottom of Burt’s Hill and use the entrance on the left before the Horns Inn to come in via Deans Grove, and the second entrance after the Horns Inn to leave. Members of our staff will be on hand at key times to guide you. Outside of the times listed above, we will be operating as normal, entering Deans Grove via Burt’s Hill and exiting Deans Grove via Smugglers Lane.
GCSE Success
I had a first this week in my time working in Prep Schools - I awarded a GCSE Certificate in assembly! Well done to Wilbur L who not only took his German GCSE 3 years early - but achieved a Grade 9 (an A* in old money!). We're incredibly proud of him, and what a great example of 'aiming high'.
Goodbye Miss Taylor
We say goodbye to Miss Becky Taylor next week - and we wish her the very best for her return to teaching. Miss Taylor has been an incredibly dedicated and caring presence to so many Nursery children - and their parents - and she will be greatly missed. We have appointed Miss Taylor's successor, who we're confident will build on her excellent work as Head of Nursery - and I look forward to writing to Nursery parents about this next week.
Some Messages from Dumpton Friends
- Post Christmas Toy and Gift Amnesty - after the excitement of Christmas, many families find themselves having a little clear out. If you happen to come across any new or good condition toys or gifts that are no longer needed, we'd be very happy to give them a new home. This amnesty is about reducing waste, encouraging reuse and supporting sustainability. Any donations will be used for future events but is completely optional.
- Sports Equipment swap/shop - we are now accepting donations of sports equipment like football boots, astros, hockey sticks, shin pads etc that are no longer needed and in good condition. Donated items can be swapped like-for-like or purchased at a discounted price. Please see Classlist for how to donate and access the shop throughout the school year.
- Quiz Night - we are excited to announce our next quiz night is on Thursday 12 February, supported by East Street Deli. It's a great opportunity to test your knowledge, enjoy some friendly competition and meet up with friends. You can find all the information and book your tickets on Classlist now.
