Headmaster's Newsletter, Friday 28th November 2025

Dear Parents

This afternoon, our students stepped away from the usual timetable and into ‘Give Back Friday’ - a day dedicated to generosity, community, and global citizenship. As an antidote to Black Friday, the focus wasn’t on getting more - it was on giving back. As I said to the pupils in assembly, all of us are fortunate to live a life where we ‘get’ so much: three meals a day; as many new clothes as we need; lots of Christmas presents! It is so important that we appreciate these things, and that we learn, alongside all that ‘getting’ to ‘give’ too, to those less fortunate than ourselves, supporting our communities - and our planet.

Throughout the day, the children put compassion into action: wrapping presents for those in need, sorting second-hand shoes, creating heartfelt cards for care-home residents, harvesting vegetables from the allotments, baking biscuits to share, and planting trees for a greener future. Even our brilliant Pre-Prep got involved, completing a sponsored walk through the woods.

Global Citizenship at Dumpton is about empowering the next generation to make the world a better place, and realising that small actions can make a big difference - and this afternoon, all 300 odd pupils at Dumpton did exactly that.

Christmas Events!
Look out for the Carol Service communication sent out earlier today, with details about the special arrangements for this last day of the Christmas Term. We have the Christmas Fayre on Friday too, and though we have already sent out some details, it is a day of moving parts! A final communication with everything you need to know all in one place will be sent out early next week. For ease, the rest of the term's calendar can be found below.

A visit from Dumpton Royalty!
Anyone connected with Dumpton’s past will know the names of Garth and Barbie Watson, who ran the school from 1977 to 2005 and are largely responsible for the thriving school we know today. They, along with Chairs of Governors John Ramond and Robin Sadler visited the school on Wednesday. It was a very, very special visit, and a reminder that we ‘stand on the shoulders’ of those that come before us. Some of the stories were incredible! Do see the post on @Dumptonhead for some pictures and thoughts on these very special people.

Sport
Kudos to the U11A Boys for their valiant 3rd place in the IAPS Tournament on Wednesday – a brilliant display not just of excellent rugby, but teamwork and resilience. Some brilliant girls football v Sandroyd and Port Regis this week, as well as some other epic encounters for the boys against Port Regis who always offer a great match in the rugby season. Well done all!

The Addams Family
Y6 and Y7 are off to Canford on Tuesday to watch the Addams Family, their Autumn production at the Layard Theatre. A letter with all information has been sent already by email.

Contrast – Prep School House Art Competition – See Attached Poster
This is a wonderful opportunity for any keen or budding young artists to demonstrate their creativity and skill. As well as earning points for their House, any winning entries will be considered for the iArt Competition, a prestigious National Art competition. All entries to Mr Loe by Friday 12th December. You may choose subject matter, use the media of your choice and it can be any size. Please put your name, class and house on the back of your entry. Three categories: Year 3 and 4, Year 5 and 6, Year 7 and 8.

Homework Review
We are conducting an internal review of homework in the Prep School, with an aim to ensure that homework is really effective and has an impact, but also that it is manageable and clear for all concerned. Given its an area that overlaps so much with you as parents, we are really keen to get your different views as part of this, as well as of course input from pupils, staff and what the latest educational research tells us effective homework looks like. Please look out for a letter and a brief survey by Mr Morgan next week – we're grateful for your input as we look to finetune what we do!

Lost Property
Please can we urge you to ensure that ALL items are named. Named items are sorted and returned to their owners. Unnamed items sit sadly in the laundry basket wishing for a new home. Please note that sewn in name labels don't seem to fall out and can always be read. We often pick up name stickers that have dropped off something, and can rarely make out the stamps after a couple of washes.

Medication in school
Any medication required by a child during school must be handed in to Matron, in its original packaging with the prescription label attached. We also require a form with dosage details to be completed and signed before we can give the medicine.

With best wishes for the weekend.
